# Edwardian Line

Before we get into the applied tools and modular diagnostics of Cultural Physics, we have to mark what holds the field together. The following mechanics are not simply useful—they are foundational. They describe the survival behaviors that govern how humans coordinate collectively across all scales of cultural movement. They are named as a lineage—the Edwardian Line—not to claim novelty, but to claim continuity. These are not inventions. They are recognitions. Patterned truths observed across time, across bodies, across collapse and return.

The Edwardian Line consists of three core survival mechanics that evolved to handle the fundamental challenges of collective human coordination:

* **The Edwardian Theory of Culture (coherence)** - How groups establish and maintain shared perception for coordinated action
* **The Riley Mechanic (repair)** - How groups restore coordination after disruption, trauma, or fragmentation
* **The Hatcher Mechanic (adaptation)** - How groups evolve under changing conditions while maintaining survival capacity

Each one describes a force behavior that shows up whenever culture moves—whether that movement is smooth, broken, or under pressure. These three form the spine of Cultural Physics because they represent the core survival imperatives that drive all cultural formation. Culture exists because humans cannot survive alone. These mechanics describe how we create and maintain the collective coordination necessary for group survival.

Together, they form an integrated survival system: coherence maintains the baseline coordination, repair restores it when broken, and adaptation evolves it when conditions change. All three operate through the same fundamental process—somatic entrainment leading to shared perception that enables collective action. They are not metaphors. They are field laws that govern how isolated nervous systems synchronize into collective intelligence capable of keeping communities alive and thriving across time.
