# Symbolic Literacy and Neural Processing

**Expertise Effects:** Musicians show larger brain responses (P3 waves) to unexpected harmonic changes than untrained listeners. Cultural education literally reshapes neural processing patterns, creating different levels of aesthetic sensitivity and response.

**Cross-Cultural Research:** Studies comparing emotional responses to music across cultures find similar arousal patterns but different valence (positive/negative) interpretations. The body responds similarly; the meaning differs.

**Subliminal Priming:** Research shows that brief exposure to emotional faces (too fast for conscious recognition) can influence subsequent aesthetic judgments. Formal elements can bias reception through pre-conscious pathways.
