# Hierarchy = Narrative Priority

## **Principle:** What gets attention first shapes everything that follows.

**Mechanism:** Human attention follows predictable patterns across all mediums. In visual design, the eye moves from high contrast to low, large to small, bright to dim. In music, the ear follows melody over harmony, loud over soft. In speech, emphasis and volume guide processing. In cultural narratives, the first frame sets the interpretive context for everything after.

**Cultural Application:** Reading hierarchy reveals the intentional construction behind cultural moments. Political campaigns, viral content, social movements, and brand communications all use hierarchical design to guide collective attention through specific sequences. When you can read the hierarchy, you can see the design logic—and predict where attention will flow next.

Analysis Tools:

* Map what gets primary attention (size, volume, emphasis, positioning)
* Identify secondary and tertiary elements in the composition
* Track the pathway of attention flow across the cultural expression
* Assess whether hierarchy serves coherence or creates confusion
